Access Statement for Castle Cottage Chilham Bed & Breakfast
Introduction
Castle Cottage is a three hundred year old house on a steep hillside, in a conservation area. The nature of the house and the area it is situated in, limits permanent solutions to the problems of accessibility, particularly for wheel chair users. All bedrooms are first floor, and no stair lift is available.
No smoking policy in the whole house, smoking permitted in the garden.

- Guide Dogs are allowed onto the premises and guest room.
Arrival & Car Parking Facilities
- Pedestrian access is via a locked gate straight off the road with a substantial step, no permanent ramp is possible since this would be in the road, a brick path leads to the front door. The gate has an intercom, situated 148cm above the road.
- No special disability parking. Off road parking is available as is free public parking, both are equidistant from the front door, approximately 15 meters.
- Off road vehicular access is illuminated at night and locked 24 hours a day, access can be requested via the intercom on the pedestrian gate. A small gate leads from the parking to the front door, via a gravel covered path and grass. Entry to the front door is via 2 steps.
Main Entrance, Reception, & Public Areas
- Entry to the front door is via a small porch and 2 small steps, no alternative door available.
- The carpeted, entrance hall is multipurpose, containing seating/reception area, dinning area, and staircase to first floor.
- When not in use lighting is low, guests are invited to turn on lights as required. Night/emergency lights are also installed in all public areas.
- There is no signage in the entrance hall, guests are personally familiarised with the house and garden on arrival. The available equipment is pointed out, and is also detailed in the house guide, which is found in each room.
- Stairs with banister lead to first floor accommodation.
- All flooring is carpeted except in the bathrooms which have vinyl flooring.
- Ground floor toilets are made available only to guests with limited mobility.
Bedrooms & Sleeping Areas:
- Bedrooms are all on the first floor, one needs to be accessed via narrow corridors unsuitable for wheelchairs.
- Hypo allergenic bedding available on request.
- Instructions in the event of a fire on the door of each bedroom. In addition to the fire gong and alarms, personal call to each room if no personal H&S hazard involved.
- Analogue Television with teletext available.
- Guest fridge with fresh milk on the landing, and room for personal items.
- Provision for guide dogs only.
- Central heating provided, and fan or fan heater available.
- Window nets available.
- No telephone available.
- Cordless Kettle and Variety of tea/ coffee/ herbal drinks provided.
Bathrooms
- En-suite or private use(Not shared)
- Shower in bath with grab-rail.
- Bath-mat provided.
- Flooring, non-slip laminate.
Garden
- Large Terraced garden on steep hillside, steps with banister lead from Terrace to terrace, alternative route available via gravelled area or grass.
- Paths in the garden are grassed. Good view of most of the garden and the valley from the top terrace.
- No toilet available in the garden.
